  • Choosing a padel racket is not easy, especially considering the large range of rackets online, in your shop and in your club. Together we will look for the best type of racket for you!

    Which racket is appropriate for me? Does the price determine how strong my racket is? Does a woman have to play with a different racket than a man? Does the shape of my racket affect how I play? Every novice padel player struggles with the same questions. Questions to which unfortunately there is no one-sided answer. Below we outline step-by-step on which basis you choose a racket and what you should take into account in the selection process.

    Which racket you buy depends 100% on how often you play and what your ambition is. Did you just start with padel? Then it is very important to buy a flexible racket. Have you been playing competition in padel for years? Then it’s better to focus on the category with ‘stiff’ rackets. Sounds logical, but how do I choose a racket based on that?

    Guidelines to buy a racket:

    For the novice padeller comfort is especially important and so we are looking for a racket made of fiberglass or alutex in combination with a SOFT Performance mousse. Always pay attention to the shape of the racket and especially the position of the ‘Sweet Spot’ (= the centre of gravity of your racket). With our rackets the sweet spot is always shown on the racket itself. As a novice player, it is best to choose a sweet spot in the center of the racket, which will offer you the most comfort.

    2. The player who trains about 2-3 times a week should look for a racket that suits his/her playing style. Pay special attention to the difference between ‘attacking’ and ‘defensive’ rackets. This can be seen by the shape of the racket (rather round = Control, rather angular = Attack) and the location of the sweet spot. Do you already have a history in tennis and do you know have to smash? Then you will have fun with an attacking racket. An all-round player is always good with a defensive/control racket. And for ladies there is often a Light version. Which does not exclude that ladies can play with an offensive racket!

    3. If you play in competition, you need a technical racket. Advanced players know exactly whether they prefer attacking or control rackets. What’s important here is that the rackets are made of a rigid material so that they deliver more power when hitting the ball. A novice player is mainly looking for control, while an advanced player kicks on power.

    Regardless of the level of the player and the technical characteristics of the racket, it is extremely important that a racket feels comfortable. At every ball contact, do you feel that you are not hitting the ball well? Then you probably play with a racket that doesn’t quite meet your needs (or you’d better take some extra lessons :) ).

    When buying a racket, always let someone with technical knowledge advise you. As a beginner there is no point in playing an attacking racket if you don’t know how to smash yet. So learn how to walk before you start. Throughout your (recreational) padel career you will regularly change racket because you are getting better in the sport and therefore need a different racket.

    By now, everyone knows how important it is to stay at home and thereby protect yourself and others. The past few weeks we have been overwhelmed by online challenges and videos with people training in their garden.

    But who says we have to focus so hard on those padel achievements when you can do so many other heroic gestures indoors? Time to shine: in the kitchen, doing housekeeping, etc.

    Even though during this padel isolation you long so much for that field surrounded by glass and fencing, dare to replace your racket regularly with a nice attribute. Who knows, you might discover in yourself the new Jamie Oliver or Mr. Proper?

    Time is a funny thing, it never progresses at the pace we want. So now, more than ever, make use of it :)

    And don’t worry about padel, you won’t lose those padel skills in this short period of time and the courts will still be in the same place when all this is over! Our team will continue organizing testing days and tournaments with great enthusiasm.

    Since the coronavirus is currently the only topic of conversation worldwide, we’d like to give you some advice on how to make corona-isolation more bearable. The chances of ending up in a state of monotony and boredom these days are pretty big, but like everything else, it depends on you! So stay busy and challenge yourself so this temporary (new) lifestyle becomes an automatism!

    Below are some tips that we hope will help you turn your corona isolation into something positive:

    STAY ACTIVE!

    All day in your pyjamas? No! A pyjama is a garment that, although comfortable, should only be used for sleeping. So get up and change clothes immediately. Walking, cycling and running are the only 3 sports that can currently be practiced according to government guidelines. Okay, it’s not padel, but these sports help to improve your condition. Time to push your limits and prepare optimally for the summer!

    AVOID NEGATIVITY

    Following the news regularly is good, but don’t exaggerate. The University of Antwerp surveyed some 350,000 Belgians on 24/3/20 to gauge the impact of corona measures on our daily lives. This shows that about 42% of the participants do not feel at their best in terms of mental well-being. Time to do something about this. The corona virus dominates our lives in a negative way, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do fun activities!

    TO DO LIST

    Undoubtedly everyone has a ‘to do’ list with all kinds of chores that have to be done once in a while… No need to postpone it, this period is ideal to keep your house in peak condition and spring-clean!

    PADEL ‘CHALLENGES’

    Imagination has no limits, not even when it comes to padel. That’s why you should think of a nice ‘challenge’ with which you can challenge your friends to do padel tricks. You probably already saw lots of padel challenges on social media, but an extra challenge never hurts :)

    TECHNICAL SKILLS

    You miss the weekly padel dates and are looking forward to train again? That’s possible at home, even when there’s no padel partner around. All you need is a wall, your racket and a ball. Practice on your backhand, forehand, or any segment you want to improve. Film yourself, share the video with friends, ask them what mistakes they see and especially how you can correct them.

    STAY HOME – STAY SAFE – TAKE CARE

    It’s winter in Belgium, and that means low temperatures! We have to adapt to these new conditions in our daily lives and on the padel court!

    First of all and very important is the warm-up. It’s very important to warm up well, especially in winter when we arrive to the court with more muscular tension. A good warm-up will avoid injuries and help you play at your best level.

    Even without getting into the most tactical part, we have to analyse the state of the court, finding different states of both the carpet and the windows. If we play on an indoor court, the conditions are usually not very different, unless there is too much moisture and we notice it in the windows. On the contrary, if we play outdoors, we have to take into account the state of the windows. It is very common that once the sun goes down, mist begins so we must take extreme precautions when the ball bounces on the glass, because if the ball is slow it tends to slip and fall down, and if it bounces on the side wall or has effect, it usually bounces differently. Regarding the carpet, if it has rained or with the humidity of the environment, or some dew falls, the track will be a bit slippery, so we will have to adapt our game to that speed.

    When it is time to play, the first thing we will notice is that the ball bounces a lot less, as it loses pressure in the cold. This will change our game tips in a clear and evident way, which we will distinguish between defense and attack:

    Offense:

    The power smash, one of the best weapons to win the point, is virtually gone when the temperature drops, so if we are used to win points with this shot, we must be varying the shot in search of a vibora or bandeja somewhat more aggressive than usual. Very important are the serve and the first volley, to not lose the initiative of the point, as the defender can use the lob more easily. As there are not so many winning shots, the points are usually extended, so patience when building up the point, looking for different plays and open spaces will usually help you to win more.

    Defense:

    Obviously, by bringing less speed into the game, it is easier to defend from the back of the court. First of all, we must throw more lobs, as it will be difficult for the opponent to hit winning shots from the air. We should not be afraid to play for a long time in defense, working on the point until we can get the net with one of the lobs, because playing at a lower speed gives the defense a higher chance at success. That the ball has little bounce, will force us to play more bent in defense. Important to warm up our lower limbs before getting started!

    Finally, if the court is wet, it is vitally important to play with first serves and impact well the first volley, because losing the net can be a torture to return to conquer it. In the hits above the head, it is relatively easy to get a good ball that accelerates and has little output, so we can throw something stronger without fear that the ball will have a lot of bounce. In defense with the wet track, we should be very careful with the lobs we give, as our defensive shots are usually coming from very low and the ball usually weighs more! In some conditions it will be important so select more carefully which balls we take with the walls, and which ones we take before in half volley. Playing defense is more difficult with a wet court, so think about it that one break could be enough to win the set!

    Hi! I’m Sergio Muñoz, Olympic Athlete and also padel trainer and player.

    In this article I willl talk about the importance of a good warm up before you enter the padel court. A good warm up will lead to less injuries and a better performance without a doubt.

    Part 1 – ACTIVATION

    3 minutes jogging ‘to get your motor started’. This can be on a running track close to the club, or just in between the padel courts.

    Part 2 – ARTICULAR MOBILITY

    In continuation we activate all joints by moving them without extra weights. The focus should be especially on the lower limbs, elbow, wrist and shoulders. 

    Part 3 – MOVEMENTS

    To finish off we make some short movements in all directions, preferably by simulating padel movements. During 4 minutes of these, the intensity can rise progressively. Make sure to do some sideways and backwards movements, short sprints and lunges.

    After this warm-up you’re physically ready to go on the court, do the specific padel warm-up with your opponent and enjoy your padel game! Padel is a very mental sport and an important factor is the self confidence. With physical readiness at the very start of the match, your performance will be very positively influenced.

    While the amount of padel clubs and players grows day by day in Belgium, Herwebo (AFP courts distributor) and Trema Sport (AFP distributor) joined forces and opened a brand new adidas padel distribution center in Zele. Ale Galan, currently nr. 7 of the world, was present at the inauguration on May 4 and 5 to meet his biggest padel fans, visit clubs and padel schools nearby, play exhibition tournaments and have a taste of the Belgian culture.

    With one of the biggest and rising stars of the World Padel Tour today, it was a big honor to welcome Ale Galan in Belgium. Posters and rackets were signed, hundreds of pictures were taken. On Saturday, Ale made a visit to the historical center of Ghent and afterwards he had a meet & greet with the juniors of Padel 4U2 Gent. In the evening he played an exhibition match at the adidas padel Belgium headquarters. On Sunday he visited the biggest Belgian club in Antwerp: Ter Eiken for an exhibition match with local top players. Finally, after another exhibition match in Zele, Ale returned to Madrid to prepare for the next important WPT in Vigo. A short visit with big impact for the growing Belgian padel market!
